How to Properly Water Your Lawn

Summer time has arrived and it’s a hot one! As things heat up, our lawns begin to deteriorate and all our hard work in the Spring can go to waste if we aren’t proactive with watering the grass. People often ask, How much should I water?  When? How often? What’s the best way to do it? Consistent mowing and fertilizing with your Bad Boy Mower or Branson Tractor are important factors in lawn health, but if you want to have the best looking yard in town then you need to check out these tips!

1. How much should I water?

Too little water and the grass dies. Too much water and it drowns. Most landscaping professionals suggest that a healthy and established lawn needs at least 1 -1 ½ inches of water per week. So how do you measure the amount of water you are using? There are several ways to do it. Check out one of them in the video below:

2. When should I water?

The time of day that you water is an important factor in law health. Watering early in the morning is best because the land has cooled overnight and the wind tends to be more calm. This allows the water to soak into the soil and be absorbed into the roots before any evaporation takes place. Many people water their lawns in the evening, but this is not the best practice as having a wet lawn overnight does not give your grass the opportunity to be fed by sunlight.

3. How often should I water?

It’s a lot less than you might think. The standard recommendation is to water you lawn two to three times per week. If you water too often it can give your grass a shallow root system and weaken the turf. In the cooler months there is less evaporation and more rainfall, so one to times per week is probably sufficient.

4. What’s the best way to do it?

There are many different solutions for watering your lawn and at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference. You could use hose-end sprinklers, pulsating sprinklers, in-ground sprinklers, and even smart water systems if you have the budget.

By implementing these tips combined with proper mowing and fertilization, you’ll be on track to have the best looking lawn in town!
